WES NEWTON was left to rue missed doubles as he exited the Stan James World Matchplay at the first hurdle on Sunday night.
The Fleetwood star lost 10-2 to Canada's John Part, but was punished for a string of wasted opportunities on his Winter Gardens debut.
"I'm absolutely gutted," he said. "In the first half of the game I think I had chances in every leg, but if you don't take your chances you don't deserve to win.
"John certainly punished me, big style, so I can't complain."
Newton was making his first appearance in front of a his local crowd, which included brother Dale - who also plays on the PDC circuit - his family and friends.
"I wasn't nervous," added Newton. "It felt like it took me about half an hour to get to the stage but I was fine.
"I was playing really well going into the game, I just missed doubles on the night.
"It's a dream to get up there and play, and I'm gutted the way it ended but it will give me more hunger for next time and hopefully I'll be here again next year. It's experience for me."
