PETER MANLEY fended off the challenge of Kevin Spiolek to move into round two of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship in straight sets.

The number five seed, twice the beaten finalist at the Circus Tavern, failed to quite hit the high spots which earned him the nickname 'One Dart', but had more than enough to see off his opponent.

Spiolek, who appeared in the first seven PDC World Championships, looked confident on his return to the big stage, but ultimately could not match Manley's firepower.

Manley took the opening two legs without reply, including a 155 finish, before Spiolek settled and hit back to level the set.

Manley regained his range on the doubles to take the set, and moved 2-0 up by winning the second 3-1.

Spiolek managed to hold his throw in the next to take the set into a decider, but three ton-plus scores from Manley gave him the cushion to wrap up victory.

"It was a difficult game for me, having to follow Colin Lloyd's defeat to Gary Welding," revealed Manley.

"That made me aware that the underdog can win, and I was a little nervous at the start.

"Kevin threw well in spells but I always responded well and was never concerned though.

"Fair play to him, he has qualified but it has been a long time since he's been up there and my experience of being on TV from recent years probably helped me.

"I can look forward to the next round now. I'm back on Boxing Day and the crowd will be bigger and there will be more atmosphere, so I can't wait."
