PartyPoker.net European Championship - Day Two

ADRIAN LEWIS defied a badly cut hand to progress to round two of the PartyPoker.net European Championship on Friday night.

Lewis went on stage at the Südbahnhof in Frankfurt sporting three plasters on a cut left hand after attempting to catch a falling glass shortly before his game.

Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade, ranked number two and three in the world, had less problems in their opening matches in the tournament.

Van Barneveld took a 5-2 win over Andy Jenkins, while Wade dropped just one leg in seeing off Alex Roy.

Jelle Klaasen dumped number six seed Colin Lloyd from the tournament with a 5-2 victory, while Denis Ovens picked off three ton-plus checkouts in a 5-1 win over Andy Hamilton.

Peter Manley reeled off four successive legs to see off Kevin Painter, while Alan Tabern overcame Chris Mason 5-1 and Dennis Priestley knocked out Jan van der Rassel 5-3.

Van Barneveld now meets Priestley in the second round on Saturday, while Wade takes on Manley, Tabern meets Klaasen and Ovens takes on a patched-up Lewis.

Phil Taylor meets Mervyn King - the only player to have defeated the world number one twice in 2008 - while Spain's Carlos Rodriguez faces Ronnie Baxter.

DENIS OVENS 5-1 ANDY HAMILTON
DENIS OVENS produced a clinical display to power into the second round of the PartyPoker.net European Championship.

Ovens came from a leg down to win five in a row and book his last 16 berth in style with three ton-plus checkouts.

Hamilton won the opening leg in 14 darts, having missed the bullseye for a 170 finish, before Ovens clicked into gear.

A bullseye finish for a 127 checkout was followed by double eight and double 16 as he took a 3-1 lead.

Hamilton missed the bullseye in the next, and could only watch on as Ovens checked out 160 and then wrapped up the win with a 116 finish.

"I was very focused and the finishes put a lot of pressure on Andy," said Ovens. "I'm delighted to get the win and very pleased with my performance."

DENNIS PRIESTLEY 5-3 JAN VAN DER RASSEL
DENNIS PRIESTLEY overcame the challenge of Jan van der Rassel at the PartyPoker.net European Championship with a 5-3 first round victory.

Priestley survived a mid-game lapse in his doubles to hold off the Dutchman's challenge, having opened up a 2-0 lead early on with successive double top finishes.

The pair traded 180s in the next before van der Rassel got off the mark on double ten, with Priestley waiting on tops.

Priestley missed two darts at a double in the next leg as the Dutchman levelled, but moved 3-2 up despite two more misses in leg five.

Van der Rassel punished a host more wayward doubles in the next to level once more, taking out double top, before the two-time World Champion regained his range on the same bed to lead 4-3.

He then landed another 180 in pulling clear in leg eight, and hit double eight to secure his second round spot.

"My doubles were good early on but they slipped away," said Priestley, who has undergone radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer recently.

"I tired but got through the game and I've got to pick myself up and carry on on Saturday now."

ADRIAN LEWIS 5-2 HANNES SCHNIER
ADRIAN LEWIS swept to a 5-2 victory over Hannes Schnier in the PartyPoker.net European Championship - and was then taken to hospital for stitches in a cut hand.

Lewis went on stage at the Südbahnhof in Frankfurt sporting three plasters on a cut left hand after attempting to catch a falling glass shortly before his game.

He admitted to feeling feint during the match, and was taken for checks and stitches in two deep cuts after seeing off the Austrian's challenge.

Lewis showed few ill-effects in opening up a 3-0 lead against Schnier, who stepped in to take the fourth leg on double 18 and bring a supportive crowd to its feet.

Lewis extended his lead on double two, but the Austrian hit a second 180 of the game on his way to winning leg six.

The Stoke youngster replied with a maximum of his own in the next, and hit double ten to ensure his second round spot, before dashing from the stage for his hospital visit.

"I was just pleased to get the game out of the way," admitted Lewis. "I felt a bit feint during the game and need stitches in my thumb and one finger, but luckily it wasn't my throwing hand.

"A glass fell from a table and I tried to catch it on the bounce, but it shattered in my hand."

JELLE KLAASEN 5-2 COLIN LLOYD
DUTCHMAN Jelle Klaasen raced into the last 16 of the PartyPoker.net European Championship with a 5-2 defeat of Colin Lloyd.

The quick-fire former Lakeside Champion was in superb form to book his second round spot, with a brilliant opening seeing him take a 2-0 lead before firing in successive 180s in a 13-darter to win leg three.

A two-dart 90 finish of bullseye and double top got Lloyd off the mark, but Klaasen replied with a 180 to kick off leg five before landing double top to take a 4-1 cushion.

Lloyd won leg six to stay in the contact and hit a maximum of his own in the next, but misses at double 12 and double six gave Klaasen the chance to seal victory on double four.

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 5-2 ANDY JENKINS
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD began his challenge in the PartyPoker.net European Championship by defeating Andy Jenkins 5-2.

The Dutchman produced a below-par display at the Südbahnhof in Frankfurt, but still ensured a second round clash with Dennis Priestley.

Three missed doubles in the opening leg allowed Jenkins to take the lead on double two, and van Barneveld recovered from further shaky finishing to land double top in the second and level.

A 116 finish put him 2-1 up, and a 12-darter, including a 180 and a 92 checkout, saw the Dutchman lead 3-1.

But he missed four darts at a double in the next before Jenkins eventually hit double four, but the Portsmouth man was denied the chance to level when van Barneveld took out double 16.

The five-time World Champion landed a maximum to pull clear in the next, and sealed the win on double 13.

"I'm glad to be through but there's improvement in me and I can do better than I showed against Andy," said van Barneveld.

"I'll have to stay focused against Dennis because he is a great player and he has been playing world class darts this year."

JAMES WADE 5-1 ALEX ROY
WORLD NUMBER THREE James Wade made a confident start to his PartyPoker.net European Championship challenge with a 5-1 defeat of Alex Roy.

Wade was dumped from the Sky Poker World Grand Prix by Tony Eccles in the first round at the start of October, but was never in danger of a repeat.

Roy had won a Players Championship in Scotland a fortnight ago to win his place in Frankfurt, but never found top gear against Wade.

Wade opened the game with a superb 135 finish on the bullseye, and took out double six to extend his lead before stepping in to win leg three on double top after Roy missed his chance on double 16.

Double ten put Wade a leg away from victory before Roy got himself off the mark in leg five.

But Wade was too strong in the next to have enough breathing space, after misses at double eight and double four, to seal the win on double two.

ALAN TABERN 5-1 CHRIS MASON
ALAN TABERN swept into the second round of the PartyPoker.net European Championship with a 5-1 defeat of Chris Mason.

Tabern dropped just one leg in a confident start to his challenge in Frankfurt, setting up a last 16 clash with Jelle Klaasen on Saturday.

He landed a nerve-settling 180 in the opening leg, and took out double top to lead after Mason missed the bullseye to snatch the lead.

A two-dart 71 doubled the advantage before Mason hit two 180s in a superb 11-darter to get off the mark.

Tabern won leg four to lead 3-1, and three missed doubles from Mason allowed him to move a leg away from victory on double ten.

He then wrapped up the win with a 62 finish to move into the last 16.

PETER MANLEY 5-2 KEVIN PAINTER
PETER MANLEY won four successive legs to grab a 5-2 victory over Kevin Painter in the PartyPoker.net European Championship.

Manley trailed Painter 2-1 early in a close contest, with the Daventry-based star taking out 98 to win the first leg and hitting a second maximum of the game on his way to the third.

But a missed double 16 let Manley in to win the second, and the Carlisle man took out double ten to level at two-all.

He hit a key 180 in the fifth before breaking throw to lead for the first time, and added another maximum in the next before punishing two missed doubles from Painter to land double five.

Manley then produced scores of 140, 140 and 171 to pull clear in leg seven, before misses at double eight and double four from Painter allowed him to seal the win on double five.
