ROLAND SCHOLTEN survived a comeback from veteran Dave Whitcombe to progress to the second round of the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.
Whitcombe, making his return to top-level darts after almost 15 years out of the limelight, rolled back the years to threaten a comeback from 2-0 down in the contest.
The former World Championship finalist, though, could not match Scholten in the decisive fourth set as the Dutchman moved into the last 32.
Scholten began the match in dominant mood, winning six out of the first seven legs to take the first two sets, including a 141 finish.
Whitcombe edged the third set, thanks to finishes of 106 and 112, and took the first leg of the fourth.
But Scholten regained his touch around the treble twenty and took three successive legs to seal victory.
