ROLAND SCHOLTEN 4-2 TOMAS SEYLER
(3-1, 3-0, 2-3, 3-1, 2-3, 3-0)
DUTCH giant Roland Scholten ended German hopes of a shock at the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship with a 4-2 defeat of Tomas Seyler at the Circus Tavern.
Seyler knocked out Jamie Harvey last week on his Purfleet debut, and threatened a shock when he matched Scholten blow-for-blow during their second round meeting.
But the number four seed proved more clinical on his doubles to move through to round three.
Scholten began the match with a maximum 180, winning the opening leg in 12 darts and taking the first set 3-1.
He extended his lead to 2-0 in the match by taking the next without reply before the German came from two legs down to win the third set in a decider.
Scholten recovered and took the next 3-1, but Seyler continued to battle and won the fifth set 3-2.
But the Dutchman refused to buckle and sealed victory by winning the sixth set without reply.
"It's good to be through, but I can play better," said Scholten. "I took him too lightly during the third set and realised I had to put my foot down.
"Then he took another set because I wasn't scoring too well when I should have been pounding the board like in the first two sets, but I've learned from that and hopefully it won't happen again.
"When it's going well it's hard to maintain your concentration and that is where I have gone wrong before, but if I play like I did in the first two sets I'm capable of doing a lot in this tournament."
Seyler said: "I've enjoyed myself and it has been a good experience for me. Hopefully I'll have a good year and come back again next year.
"I missed some doubles and could have played better, but I did my best."
