Super Six For The Wizard

COLIN OSBORNE defeated nine-dart hero Jelle Klaasen 6-3 to win the final of Group Six in Championship League Darts.

Osborne had competed for the previous three days in the internet-televised tournament, but progressed to the Winners Group for a second successive year with the triumph.

He finished second overall in the day's league phase, alongside Klaasen and Wayne Jones on five wins, after making a fine start to the day with four straight wins.

He then defeated Jones 6-4 in the semi-finals, before a clinical display saw off debutant Klaasen in the decider.

Osborne took an immediate 3-0 lead in the final, including a 110 finish against the throw, before finishes of 134 and 130 put Klaasen back in the contest.

However, he was left waiting on a finish in the next two legs as Osborne took out 124 on the bull and then double top to lead 5-2.

A 96 finish gave Klaasen a third leg, but Osborne took the next on double five to seal victory and his spot in the Winners Group on October 22.

"I'm finally through at the fourth time of asking and it's a big relief," said Osborne, who has so far won £8,700 in the event.

"I started off pretty well today, I was solid and got the points on the board early on and it was good just to get into the semi-finals.

"I played solidly against Wayne and also against Jelle in the final, and I finished well."

He added: "I lost in the final on Wednesday and had to pick myself up again, but you can't complain because you're playing darts and have to get on with it.

"These are long days and it's tough, but I've won one and it's great - I get to rest now and just come back for the Winners Group!"

Klaasen, making his first ever appearance in the Championship League Darts event, showed his quality with some brilliant displays in the league phase, notably hitting a nine-darter against Osborne in their group match.

He was joined by Jones, making his 2009 debut, in winning five league matches, while Lewis edged out Terry Jenkins for fourth by winning his final two league matches 6-1 and 6-0.

Lewis, though, was unable to finally qualify after losing in a deciding leg to Klaasen in the semi-finals after leading 5-3.

The Stoke youngster has appeared in all six groups so far this year, and will return next month for Group Seven having won £11,100 but not yet qualified for the Winners Group.

Jenkins and Andy Smith will also come back in Group Seven on October 20, but Denis Ovens and Mark Dudbridge were eliminated after picking up just one win on Thursday.

Group Seven will be played on Tuesday October 20 at the start of the final three days of action from Crondon Park GC in Essex, with Kirk Shepherd, Tony Eccles and Holland's Co Stompe coming into the fray.

NEWS UPDATES
First Round of Games

Adrian Lewis edged out Terry Jenkins in a deciding leg to open Group Six with a victory. The ever-present Stoke ace had to come from 2-0 and 4-2 down to take the win, as he searches to finally win a place in the Winners Group. Jenkins broke in the opening leg and posted a 12-darter to double the lead, before Lewis punished missed doubles to win two of the next three. An 80 finish put Jenkins 4-2 up, only for Lewis to set up a 24 finish with a 180 in the seventh leg and land double top to break for four-all. Jenkins hit back with a 180 and double 18 to lead 5-4, but double two from Lewis sent the game into a decider. Lewis opened the 11th leg with scores of 180, 140 and 135 but missed doubles allowed Jenkins - who also hit a maximum - his chance at a 100 finish, only to miss two darts at double top and allow the youngster to hit double five for the win.
Andy Smith opened up his 2009 Championship League Darts bid with a narrow 6-5 win over Wayne Jones. The battle of two of the Group Six new-boys went all the way in a tight contest, where neither player was able to move clear. The first six legs went with the throw before Jones punished three misses from Smith to lead 4-3 - only for Smith to break back immediately and then hit a 180 in setting up a double ten finish as he went 5-4 up. Jones took the next to force a decider, but allowed Smith to pull clear, and he had the breathing space to miss four darts for the game before taking out double ten.
Jelle Klaasen enjoyed a winning debut in Championship League Darts with a 6-2 win over Mark Dudbridge. Klaasen made a strong start, hitting a 180 and a bullseye finish to take the first leg before Dudbridge, the Group Five league leader, took out 101 to level and double top to lead 2-1. However, another maximum from Klaasen helped him to win the fourth leg and he took advantage of two misses from Dudbridge to break once more and lead 3-2 - and a 112 finish pushed him clear before finishes on double 16 and double ten secured the win.
Colin Osborne began Group Six with a 6-3 win over Denis Ovens. A strong start from the Derby man saw him open up a 3-0 lead, including hitting six perfect darts in a 12-darter in leg three. Ovens won two of the next three, only for four eight to put Osborne 5-2 up. Four missed match darts allowed Ovens to take the eighth, but he wasted three chances to win a fourth leg before Osborne posted double ten for the points.

Second Round of Games
Terry Jenkins edged past Andy Smith 6-5 to claim his first win in Group Six. Jenkins took advantage of a slow start to lead 3-1, before Smith hit back to level - only to then miss six darts for the seventh leg after opening with scores of 180 and 177. A 98 finish saw Jenkins move 5-3 up, before Smith took out 100 and then double six to ensure a decider. But the Warwickshire-based thrower missed double top to win the decider, and Jenkins took out 93 on double 18 for the win.
Jelle Klaasen hits nine-darter during game with Colin Osborne - but still ended up a 6-3 loser! The Dutchman trailed 2-0 early on but took out double 18 to win the third leg and then kicked off the fourth with two 180s, before posting treble 20, treble 19 and double 12 to complete the perfect leg. Klaasen, though, was unable to kick on from that, missing two doubles for the next leg as Osborne took out double eight, before he took the sixth and then a 152 checkout to lead 5-2. Klaasen hit a 180 and double 16 to claim the eighth as OSborne missed three match darts, but the Derby man made no mistake in the next on double top.
Denis Ovens produced a remarkable fightback from 5-1 down to defeat Mark Dudbridge in a deciding leg. Dudbridge made a fine start, leading 2-1 before taking out 141 for a 12-darter and then 81 on tops to lead 4-1, before punishing six misses from Ovens to move a leg away from the match. Ovens took leg seven and then punished four missed match darts in the next, as well as three in leg nine to pull back to 5-4. Dudbridge wasted a further two chances in the tenth as Ovens hit a 180 and then double six to force a decider, where he hit two 140s to pull away and double 16 for a remarkable win.
Wayne Jones picked up his first win of Group Six, defeating Adrian Lewis 6-3. Lewis had kicked off a sixth successive day in the tournament with a victory, but a strong second half to the game from Jones saw the Wolverhampton man - newly nicknamed "The Wanderer" - take the points. The game's first six legs were shared before Jones took the first break in leg seven, landing a 180 to leave 40, which he took out on double five. A double 19 finish put him 5-3 up, and he then sealed victory on double eight.

Third Round of Games
Colin Osborne maintained hisunbeaten start to Group Six with a 6-2 win over Andy Smith. Smith took the game's opening leg, but Osborne pulled clear with four successive legs - hitting six perfect darts in one leg and two breaks of throw. Double top gave Smith a second leg, but Osborne hit five perfect darts and a 76 finish in the seventh and a 100 checkout for victory.
Terry Jenkins claimed a second successive victory, defeating Jelle Klaasen 6-4 in a quick-fire contest. The duo shared the opening six legs before Jenkins took the first break to move 4-3 up, and then landed a 180 in taking the next. Klaasen won leg nine, but Jenkins recovered to land double ten for the points.
Wayne Jones twice fought back from behind before defeating Denis Ovens 6-5. Ovens took the game's first two legs before Jones hit back, twice breaking throw in moving 3-2 up and then landing double ten for a two-leg cushion of his own. However, Ovens took out double 16 and then double top to level, and another double top finish put him in front 5-4. Jones landed a timely 180 in sending the match into a decider, and pulled clear to land double 18 to take the win.
Mark Dudbridge produced a fine 13-darter to win a deciding leg of his clash with Adrian Lewis and claim his first win of Group Six. The duo enjoyed a tight battle, sharing the first six legs before Dudbridge took two in a row to lead 5-3 - only to miss match darts in the next two legs as Lewis drew level. Having thrown away a 5-1 cushion in his previous game, Dudbridge this time prevailed by leaving a finish after nine darts and then taking out double top for victory in 13 darts.

Fourth Round of Games
Colin Osborne battled back from 5-3 down to maintain his winning record in Group Six, defeating Terry Jenkins in a decider. Osborne edged the early legs 2-1 before hitting six perfect darts in the fourth - only to miss two darts for the leg as Jenkins levelled on double top. Jenkins also won the next two and leg eight to lead 5-3, but missed double six for the match in the next as Osborne posted double eight to stay in the game. A 164 checkout from Osborne sent the game into a decider, and he landed double 16 for a fourth successive win after Jenkins missed double top for a 120 finish.
Jelle Klaasen made light work of Andy Smith to pick up his second win of Group Six with a 6-1 triumph. Klaasen opened the game with an 11-darter before Smith broke throw to level - but missed doubles cost him fear as Klaasen, aided by two maximums and an 89 bullseye finish, put him 4-1 up. He also took the sixth before landing a third maximum and then double eight to seal the win.
Adrian Lewis claimed win number two of Group Six with a 6-3 defeat of Denis Ovens. Lewis took out 113 in the opening leg, 86 in the second and also took leg three to lead 3-0 before a 100 finish got Ovens off the mark. Lewis won the next two to move to the brink of victory before double ten and double four kept Ovens in the game. However, there was nothing he could do in the next as Lewis piled home a 158 checkout to take the points.
Mark Dudbridge threw away a 5-1 lead for the second time in Group Six, as Wayne Jones battled back to win a decider in their clash. Jones suffered for a host of missed doubles in the early legs as Dudbridge opened up a 4-1 lead, before a third successive double top finish put the Group Five league leader four legs clear. Jones took the seventh leg and then punished four missed match darts to pull back to 5-3, before taking the next two to ensure a decider. Dudbridge landed a timely maximum, but missed double 12 and double six for the game and Jones returned to the oche to take out double 16 for the victory.

Fifth Round of Games
Wayne Jones joined Colin Osborne on four wins at the top of the table with a 6-4 victory, condemning the Derby man to his first defeat of the day. Jones built up a 3-1 lead despite continuing to struggle with doubles, before double 16 gave Osborne a second leg. Osborne missed his chances to level before double five put Jones 4-2. A 153 finish from Osborne, with Jones waiting on a double, saw him take the seventh and double eight, following three misses from his opponent, put the UK Open finalist level. Osborne missed double 16 for a 112 finish in the ninth, with double eight putting Jones 5-4 up before he landed double three for the match.
Terry Jenkins improved his chances of winning a semi-final place in Group Six with a 6-1 defeat of Mark Dudbridge. Jenkins produced his most clinical display of the day to win a third match. Having shared the first two legs, Jenkins stepped in to win the third following a missed double 18 from Dudbridge, took the next on double ten before punishing two misses from his opoponent to lead 4-1. He also won the sixth before sealing a comprehensive victory on double top.
Jelle Klaasen claimed his third win of the day with a 6-3 victory over Adrian Lewis in a rapid-fire contest. Klaasen landed a 180 and a 76 finish in taking the first leg, with Lewis taking advantage of missed doubles to level before the pair traded maximums in leg three, won by Klaasen. The young Dutchman won leg four against the throw, and won the fifth to lead 4-1. The duo swapped 180s again in the sixth, with double top giving Lewis a second leg. Klaasen held throw for leg seven, but missed one dart for the match in the next as Lewis posted double four. But Klaasen wrapped up the win with a neat two-dart 68 finish.
Andy Smith produced a 12-darter in the deciding leg to defeat Denis Ovens 6-5 in their clash. Smith opened up leads of 3-1 and 4-2 before allowing Ovens back into the game, with double eight giving the Hertfordshire man the seventh leg before Smith missed a host of darts in the next after opening the leg with six perfect darts of two 180s. A 104 finish then saw Ovens edge 5-4 up, but double eight gave Smith the tenth, and he then scored 125, 140 and 180 to leave 56 in the decider, which he took out on double ten.

Sixth Round of Games
A 6-3 win for Andy Smith eliminates Mark Dudbridge in Group Six. Dudbridge topped the Group Five table, but has struggled to regain that form on Thursday, although he took the opener against Smith. Smith won the second and punished a missed double top to break in the third leg. A 136 finish moved him 3-1 up, and two more legs pushed him to the brink of victory. A brace of double top finishes from Dudbridge saw him pull back to 5-3, but two misses in the next allowed Smith to seal the win on double four.
Adrian Lewis powered past Colin Osborne 6-1 to remain in the hunt for a semi-final berth. Osborne posted a 180 in the opening leg but missed one dart at double 16 before Lewis took out double 14 to lead. Double ten gave Osborne the second, but Lewis won the third on double 12 and then took out double top in the next three - hitting 131 and 134 in successive legs to leave 40 and punish misses from Osborne - in taking a 5-1 lead, before sealing victory on double 14.
Jelle Klaasen moved top of the Group Six table on leg difference following a 6-5 win over Wayne Jones. Jones won four of the first five legs to lead 4-1, with only a 12-darter from Klaasen, featuring two 180s, getting him on the scoreboard. The Dutchman won three of the next four to reduce the gap to 5-3, before punishing two missed match darts from Jones to take the ninth, and also won leg ten to force a decider before snatching victory on double top.
Terry Jenkins eliminated Denis Ovens from the tournament with a final-leg victory, which also keeps him in the play-off places with one game remaining. The duo shared the opening four legs before Jenkins wasted four darts to break in the fifth, with a two-dart 86 from Ovens seeing him move 3-2 up. Jenkins levelled at four-all with a 136 finish, and the duo traded the next two to force a decider, before Jenkins landed tops for the points with Ovens waiting on a double.

Final Round of Games
Wayne Jones ensured his place in the semi-finals with a 6-5 win over Terry Jenkins - who is left to sweat on the result of the final matches before finding out if he qualifies for the play-offs. The duo shared the opening four legs before Jenkins broke on double four following two misses from Jones, who then levelled in 11 darts. Double 16 edged Jones in front only for Jenkins to win two of the next three and force a decider - eventually won by Jones on double eight.
Colin Osborne booked his top four place with a 6-1 win over Mark Dudbridge. Dudbridge, who finishes bottom of the Group Six table, took the game's opening leg but Osborne levelled on double seven and never looked back after breaking in the third, following a miss at double 15 from Dudbridge for a 110 finish. Double eight and a 102 checkout put Osborne 4-1 up, and he also won leg six before landing a 180 to leave 50 in the next, sealing victory on double eight.
Jelle Klaasen's 6-1 win over Denis Ovens ensured he finishes top of the Group Six table. Klaasen produced a tremendous display, opening up with legs of 12, 11 and 12 darts, which featured two 81 finishes and then a pair of 180s in the third. Double eight put him 4-0 up before Ovens got off the mark in 12 darts in leg five, landing two 180s of his own. A 70 finish put Klaasen 5-1 up, and he landed another maximum plus double eight to wrap up the win.
Adrian Lewis snatched fourth place ahead of Terry Jenkins with a whitewash of Andy Smith in a dramatic finale to the league phase. Lewis needed to win 6-1 or 6-0 to overhaul the leg difference with Jenkins, and did just that with a fine performance, failing to drop a single leg in booking his play-off spot.

Semi-Finals
Jelle Klaasen 6-5 Adrian Lewis
Colin Osborne 6-4 Wayne Jones

Jelle Klaasen won through to the Group Six final with the narrowest of victories against Adrian Lewis. The league leader continued his impressive debut in Championship League Darts, coming from 2-0 and 5-3 down to win the final. Klaasen edged the ninth to trail 5-4 before hitting two 180s to open the tenth, missing out on a second nine-darter of the day but taking the leg in 12 to send the game into a decider. With the momentum, he pulled clear to land double eight and progress to the final.
Colin Osborne progressed to a second successive Championship League Darts final with a 6-4 win against Wayne Jones. Jones took the opener but Osborne won the next three, including a 94 checkout, to lead 3-1. Jones won the next two to level, but a 180 from Osborne left him 28 in the next as he broke, and then landed double 16 to move 5-3 up. Double eight kept Jones in the contest, but Osborne landed double 16 for the win.
