KEVIN PAINTER has targeted a place in the top four of the world rankings by the end of 2006 - as he prepares for a swift comeback after needing surgery last week.
The world number seven was rushed into hospital following the Irish Masters, needing to have his Gall Bladder removed before being released last Friday.
Despite the operation, he is expecting to be back in competitive action on Saturday when he takes part in the Budweiser UK Open Southern Regional Final in London.
After winning the North-East Regional Final in January, Painter is now looking to regain top form and jump up the rankings.
He currently sits 31 points behind Wayne Mardle, the current world number four, and is keen to overhaul the Essex star.
"My aim in 2006 is to be at least fourth by the time the World Championship comes around in December," Painter told the Unicorn website.
"It is a realistic goal. If I have good runs in the major TV tournaments, I will get there.
After being sidelined for a month with an ankle injury last year, Painter knows that being out of action can prove costly.
"I will make a final decision on Saturday morning but missing tournaments isn't on the agenda," he said.
"I missed three ranking tournaments last year and ultimately it cost me a place in the Holsten Premier League.
"I have missed out on the league again this year and I am determined to be there by right next time."
