Wade Wins Welsh Regional Final

JAMES WADE won a thrilling Blue Square UK Open Welsh Regional Final with an 8-7 defeat of Raymond van Barneveld in Newport.

The youngster took the spoils in the first PDC Pro Tour event to be streamed live online - through www.bluesquare.com - to continue his superb run of form in 2007.

It was his second Pro Tour win in a seventh final, and added to his Stan James World Matchplay triumph in Blackpool in July.

In a thrilling final, he experienced every emotion as van Barneveld hit back from 4-1 down to lead 7-5 at one stage.

However, a fine final three legs from Wade, including a 12-darter to send the game into a decider, saw him take the £6,000 title.

The final leg even saw the Dutchman landed a 180, but Wade was first to the finish and sank double 18 for victory.

He had seen off Mervyn King 7-2 in the semi-finals, and also overcame Adrian Lewis on stage.

John Quantock, Dave Ladley, Terry Jenkins and Colin Lloyd were his other victims along the way.

Van Barneveld picked up the Welsh Players Championship title on Saturday, and produced more quality darts on his way to yet another final.

He stared defeat in the face in his opening game of the day, with Michael Barnard missing three darts to win 5-2 before the Dutchman won in a decider.

Van Barneveld then overcame Adrian Gray, Steve Brown and Barrie Bates to move into the last eight, before Wayne Jones and Denis Ovens were defeated on stage.

Ovens had knocked out Phil Taylor in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 victory, while King edged out John Part 6-5 in the other last eight game.

Roland Scholten came to within a whisker of a nine-darter in the third round, missing double 18 for the perfect leg before finishing on double nine for a ten-darter in the final leg of a 5-4 win over Alan Green.

QUARTER-FINAL MATCH REPORTS
JAMES WADE 6-3 ADRIAN LEWIS

JAMES WADE soared past Adrian Lewis to reach the semi-finals of the Blue Square UK Open Welsh Regional Final.

The World Matchplay champion won five of the game's final six legs with some fine finishing.

Lewis began well, opening the match with a 180 and taking out a 121 finish to move 1-0 up, and then winning the third leg on double 12 to retain his advantage at 2-1.

He missed double top to move 3-1 up, with Wade taking out double 14, then double 12 in the next to break Lewis' throw and move ahead of the first time.

Wade then had maximums in the next two legs as he moved 5-2 up, with Lewis needing a two-dart 72 to stay in the game.

But Wade was always on top in leg nine, and took out 56 on double top to progress.

MERVYN KING 6-5 JOHN PART
MERVYN KING won a final-leg shoot-out against John Part to book his semi-final place at the Blue Square UK Open.

Part looked on course for a comfortable win when he led 3-1 early in the game, only to waste chances in the next two as King hit back to level matters.

King then took out 66 on tops to move in front, with Part then winning leg eight to level.

A 67 checkout put King within a leg of victory, only for Part to send the game into a decider on double 16.

King kicked off with back-to-back 140s in the next, and was first to the finish by missing double eight for a 101 checkout.

A 180 from Part saw him leave 28 and crank up the pressure, but King was on target at the second attempt to move into the last four.

DENIS OVENS 6-4 PHIL TAYLOR
DENIS OVENS recorded only his second ever victory over Phil Taylor with a 6-4 quarter-final win in the Blue Square UK Open Welsh Regional Final.

In-form Ovens remains on course for his second title inside a month, following his triumph in the Ireland Open Classic Players Championship earlier in September.

He trailed just once in the game - after Taylor took out 161 to win the opening leg of the match.

Ovens landed a 64 finish on double four to win leg two and then double 12 to break the throw in the third.

The next two legs also went against the throw, leaving Ovens 3-2 up before a doule 16 finish - with Taylor sat on 24 - saw him move 4-2 up.

Taylor won the next two legs to level matters, and missed three darts to take a 5-4 lead before Ovens - who had hit two maximums in the leg - mopped up on double ten to go back in front.

He began the next leg with another 180, and landed double four to send Taylor crashing out.

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 6-4 WAYNE JONES
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD held off a spirited Wayne Jones fightback to move into the semi-finals of the Blue Square UK Open Welsh Regional Final.

The Dutchman took leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before Jones hit back to level matters and set up another potential upset.

Van Barneveld began in fine fashion, winning the first three legs without reply - stepping in twice to punish misses from the Englishman.

A 135 finish saw van Barneveld move 4-1 up, with Jones having got off the mark in leg four on double 16 and then take out 89 on the bullseye to pull back to 4-2.

Van Barneveld missed three darts to win the next leg as Jones stepped in on double 16, and another miss from the World Champion allowed him to level at 4-4 on double eight.

A 65 checkout on double eight edged van Barneveld back in front, and three misses at double eight in the next from Jones gave the Dutchman a chance for the win, needing 76.

He needed just two darts, landing treble 20 and double eight to set up a semi-final against Denis Ovens.

SEMI-FINAL REPORTS
JAMES WADE 7-2 MERVYN KING

JAMES WADE booked his place in a seventh PDC Pro Tour final of 2007 with a 7-2 semi-final defeat of Mervyn King.

Wade has been in fine form of late, reaching the final of the Peachtree Open and Windy City Open Players Championships, and continued that with a stylish win against King.

He punished King with a superb mid-game burst, winning three successive legs to move from 1-1 to 4-1 in the blink of an eye.

King hit back in leg six to pull back to 4-2, but a 14-darter from Wade saw him restore his cushion.

He landed double ten with a pressure last dart to take the eighth leg, and pounced on two misses from King in the next to seal the win on double top.

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 7-3 DENIS OVENS
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD remains on course for a seventh PDC Pro Tour win of the year following a 7-3 win over Denis Ovens at the Newport Centre.

Van Barneveld picked up the Welsh Players Championship on Saturday to continue his amazing run of form in 2007, and could set off on the path to Bolton in perfect style.

He took an early 2-0 lead before Ovens stepped in to his double 18 in leg three, but the Dutchman won the next two - including a 110 finish - to go 4-1 up.

In-form Ovens took the next two with a double four finish and a 101 checkout, but van Barneveld crucially took the eighth leg on double 18 with his opponent sat on double top.

At 5-3, van Barneveld needed just two more legs for the win, and took out 80 in the ninth leg and a 57 checkout in the next for victory.
