Price believes he holds advantage in Van Gerwen rivalry

Gerwyn Price believes he has the upper-hand in his rivalry with Michael van Gerwen after defeating the Dutchman en route to winning the Gibraltar Darts Trophy on Sunday.

Price averaged 103.61 to Van Gerwen's 105.02 in their thrilling quarter-final in Gibraltar, with the Welshman winning a pulsating deciding leg against throw.

After doubling his tally of European Tour titles for the year, Price reflected on his toughest match of the weekend statistically.

"It's always nice to get one over on Michael," admitted Price, who went on to defeat Nathan Aspinall and Mensur Suljovic.

"Over the past couple of years he's been the player I've struggled to beat, but nowadays I think the tide is turning a little bit.

"Michael's not as confident as he was a couple of years ago. He's still a fantastic player, one of the best in the world but I think I'm getting on top a bit.

"You have to play well to beat anyone in the top eight, whether that's Michael or someone else.

"If I wasn't on my 'A-game' then he would've beaten me, but I still think I have more in the tank.

"To beat him when he's averaging 105 makes it even better."

Attention now turns to the BoyleSports World Grand Prix, where Price will be looking to defend the title he won for the first time in 2020.

Price's first assignment will see him face Michael Smith in Leicester, with the world number one rated a 4/1 favourite with BoyleSports to retain the title.

"I think I'm the man to beat in every tournament now," Price continued.

"I'm not the World Champion and world number one for no reason.

"Maybe a few months ago I didn't really believe in myself, but yeah I am World Champion, I am world number one.

"I should be the bookies favourite and the one they're all chasing."

Tickets for the 2021 BoyleSports World Grand Prix are available now, although some sessions have now sold out.

The tournament will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, as well as through the PDC's international broadcast partners including DAZN and RTL7, and through PDCTV for Rest of the World Subscribers.
