MICHAEL van Gerwen recaptured his form as he stormed to success in the fourth Players Championship event of the year on Saturday.
Van Gerwen saw off Adrian Lewis in the final at the Barnsley Metrodome to take his ninth PDC title of the calendar year and recover from a disappointing day at the oche on Friday where he was knocked out by Cristo Reyes in round three.
The 25-year-old looked comfortable throughout the day and breezed his way through his board as he stormed past Luke Woodhouse (6-2), Ross Twell (6-3) and Jamie Lewis (6-3).
And van Gerwen was not prepared to take his foot of the throttle as he improved further to seal back-to-back 6-1 wins against Steve Beaton and Kevin Thomas and set up a semi-final clash with Peter Wright.
Snakebite had been in similarly impressive form on the day as he blasted his way into the last four, but could not keep it going against van Gerwen as the Dutchman booked his place in the final with a 6-3 victory.
Jackpot’s route to a second final in as many days began with a 6-4 win over Nathan Derry, before he then secured back-to-back 6-2 victories against Matthew Edgar and Gerwyn Price to win his board.
A 6-3 victory over James Wilson followed, before Lewis then sealed a second successive 6-3 win against 19-year-old Jeffrey de Zwaan, who had already taken the scalps of Michael Smith and Jelle Klaasen on the day, to reach the semi-finals.
Reigning World Champion Gary Anderson, who had also returned to form after a disappointing day at the oche on Friday, was Lewis’ opponent in the last four, but Jackpot would again be too strong as he won 6-4 to set up the final with van Gerwen.
But it would be the Dutchman who maintained his form as he blitzed Lewis in the final, winning 6-1 to take the £10,000 winner’s cheque and prevent Jackpot from securing a second successive ProTour title in this weekend’s Players Championship treble-header.
The Players Championship action continues tomorrow at the Barnsley Metrodome with Players Championship Five taking place from 12pm (GMT) on Sunday.
