Coral UK Open - Friday Afternoon

EMERGING stars Keegan Brown, Joe Murnan and Ryan Harrington impressed as they progressed to the third round of the Coral UK Open on Friday afternoon - but former finalist John Part was amongst the victims in the early rounds in Minehead.

The £300,000 tournament kicked off as 115 players, a mixture of professional stars and Rileys Amateur Qualifiers, took part in the preliminary, first and second rounds across eight stages.

Reigning World Youth Champion Brown, who hails from the Isle of Wight, defeated Merseyside-based amateur qualifier Mick Brooks 5-3 on the Main Stage at the Butlins Minehead Resort before then seeing off Dutch youngster Mike Zuydwijk by the same scoreline.

Brown's reward is a third round clash with Norfolk's Nathan Derry, who edged out former UK Open semi-finalist Alan Tabern 5-4 in their second round encounter.

Bolton's Joe Murnan, who reached a European Tour quarter-final in Germany last month, was a 5-1 winner against Cheshire's Stuart Kellett as he progressed to a third round tie with two-time UK Open champion James Wade.

Former Youth Tour event winner Ryan Harrington - the son of two-time World Matchplay winner Rod - was another youngster to impress in the early rounds as he celebrated his televised debut with a 5-0 whitewash of Derbyshire's Matt Padgett.

Harrington now takes on 2014 Grand Slam of Darts finalist Dave Chisnall, the current Premier League leader who overcame World Champion Gary Anderson in Exeter on Thursday night.

Australian ace Kyle Anderson's narrow 5-4 win over Terry Temple - who missed three darts to win an enthralling contest - earned him a clash with UK Open debutant Alan Norris, the former Lakeside Championship runner-up.

Devon Petersen's wins over Matt Clark and Mark Cox saw him progress to the last 64, where he now meets Scotland's Mark Barilli in the evening session.

Premier League ace Stephen Bunting defeated Rileys qualifier Adam Huckvale 5-2 before later being drawn against St Helens rival Michael Smith in the third round.

Kevin Painter began his challenge for a second major TV title with a 5-2 win over Scotland's Jamie Bain, and he will now play Suffolk's Andrew Gilding.

Experienced Rileys qualifier John Ferrell overcame Paul Dawkins, Alex Roy and Darren Webster as he moved through to the third round - where he has drawn five-time UK Open champion Phil Taylor.

Norfolk's Jason Mold was another Rileys qualifier to progress to the last 64, as he defeated both Jamie Robinson and Matthew Edgar in a deciding leg, and he now plays 2011 UK Open finalist Wes Newton, who had seen off Martyn Turner and Jon Jukes on Friday afternoon.

Hampshire's Paul Hogan defeated Lee Russell, Derek Brand and Darren Johnson as he joined Ferrell and Mold in the last 64, where he now plays Dutch youngster Benito van de Pas, who saw off teenager Jeffrey De Zwaan 5-2.

Shropshire youngster David Pallett saw off experienced duo Mark Dudbridge and Andy Smith as he moved through to a clash with Colin Fowler, who whitewashed Steve West and defeated Jason Wilson.

Three-time World Champion John Part, the 2004 UK Open runner-up, suffered a first round exit to Zuydwijk, while Dean Winstanley exited to Ireland's William O'Connor with a 5-3 reverse.

UK Open debutant James Wilson enjoyed a whitewash win over Mark Frost before being drawn against former World Youth Championship finalist Ricky Evans.

Another debutant, Gloucestershire's Lee Evans, defeated Nick Fullwell and Ronny Huybrechts as he reached the third round to set up a clash with Vincent van der Voort.

Youngster Nathan Aspinall defeated Chris Dobey to set up a clash with James Richardson, the Northamptonshire ace who defeated Johnny Haines and Dean Stewart.

The third round draw saw reigning UK Open champion Adrian Lewis picked out against two-time winner Raymond van Barneveld, while World Champion Gary Anderson takes on Mervyn King.

World number one Michael van Gerwen takes on Paul Nicholson in another tasty contest, while 2014 finalist Terry Jenkins plays Jamie Caven, Simon Whitlock plays 2012 winner Robert Thornton and Steve Beaton drew Peter Wright.
