Sherrock secures Ally Pally return; Van Leuven confirms Grand Slam debut

Fallon Sherrock (PDC)

Fallon Sherrock will make her fifth Paddy Power World Darts Championship appearance in December, after securing her Alexandra Palace return on the final day of 2024 PDC Women’s Series action.

The year's sixth and final PDC Women's Series weekend concluded with a double-header at Leicester's Mattioli Arena, as Sherrock and Angela Kirkwood claimed a title apiece in the East Midlands.

Sherrock - who made her name with history-making wins against Ted Evetts and Mensur Suljovic at the sport’s flagship event in 2019 - came into Sunday’s double header with a £2,100 buffer over Mikuru Suzuki.

The pair went head-to-head in the Event 23 showpiece, and it was Sherrock who emerged victorious, producing a late flurry to close out a 5-2 victory and end Suzuki’s hopes of World Championship qualification.

Sherrock kicked off her campaign with a trio of 4-1 wins against Natalie Gilbert, Maret Liiri and Felicia Blay, which she backed up with 5-2 successes against Katie Sheldon and Steph Clarke in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

Kirkwood then rounded off the 2024 season with a maiden Women’s Series success, after firing in a 13-dart break to defeat Anastasia Dobromyslova in a last-leg shoot-out.

The 47-year-old eased through the early stages of Event 24 with back-to-back whitewash wins over Jan Robbins and Liiri, before defeating Lorraine Hyde 4-2 to set up a showdown against former PDC Tour Card Holder Lisa Ashton.

This sparked a sequence of four consecutive deciding-leg wins for Kirkwood, who converted a 106 checkout to defeat Ashton in the last 16.

Kirkwood continued her charge with 5-4 wins against Natalie Gilbert and Neuza Araujo - surviving multiple match darts against the Portuguese star in the semi-finals.

Araujo had ended Sherrock’s hopes of back-to-back titles with a superb 4-1 victory in the last 32, while she later denied Noa-Lynn van Leuven in the quarter-finals to register her best performance in a PDC Women’s Series event.

Van Leuven confirmed her World Championship qualification with Event 21 success on Saturday, and the Dutch star will also make her Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts debut next month, after finishing second to Beau Greaves on the PDC Women’s Series Order of Merit.

Women’s World Matchplay winner Greaves - who did not feature in Sunday’s double-header - will also compete in Wolverhampton next month, having scooped her eighth Women’s Series title of the year in Event 22 on Saturday.

Greaves ended this year's Women's Series campaign on £24,200, almost £8,000 above Van Leuven in second, with Sherrock a further £2,200 adrift in third position.
