NINE-DART hero Simon Whitlock won his second successive Players Championship title with a 6-4 defeat of Chris Dobey in Friday's £75,000 tournament in Barnsley.
Whitlock achieved perfection for the second time in a matter of weeks as he landed a nine-darter during his first round whitewash of Par Riihonen.
The Australian then went on to make the day even more memorable as he scooped the £10,000 first prize to follow up his victory in Dublin earlier this month.
Whitlock followed up his defeat of Riihonen with wins over Nathan Aspinall, Mervyn King, James Wade, Jamie Lewis and Mark Frost on his way to the final, where he saw off Dobey in a ten-leg contest.
Bedlington's Dobey, 26, enjoyed a run to his first ranking final to continue his impressive year, including a narrow 6-5 semi-final defeat of Adrian Lewis where he punished missed match darts from the world number three with a superb 120 checkout.
Dobey also defeated Mike Zuydwijk, Mickey Mansell, Dave Chisnall, Ron Meulenkamp and Stephen Bunting during an impressive day, with the £5,000 he earned set to boost him into the world's top 64 for the first time.
Two-time World Champion Lewis was joined in the semi-finals by fellow Stoke thrower Mark Frost, who reached the last four on the ProTour for the first time since March 2008.
Frost's run began with a defeat of Justin Pipe, and he also knocked out Kevin Painter, Jelle Klaasen, Kim Huybrechts and Josh Payne in a fine day.
Youngster Payne saw his bid to claim a second Players Championship win of the year ended in the last eight alongside Bunting, Jamie Lewis and Austrian youngster Rowby-John Rodriguez.
Saturday sees the year's final Players Championship take place, with players battling for spots in next month's Cash Converters Players Championship Finals and for qualifying places in the William Hill World Darts Championship.
Sunday sees the weekend conclude with the Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals Qualifier and SINGHA Beer Grand Slam of Darts Qualifier.
