SIMON WHITLOCK made a winning start to the 2010 Australian Grand Prix with victory in one of the weekend's two opening events.
Whitlock, who dominated last year's AGP circuit, defeated Jerry Weyman 6-3 at the Revesby Workers Club Open to claim the $1,000 title on Saturday.
The Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship runner-up whitewashed Dave Fitzpatrick and Scott Johnson in reaching the quarter-finals, defeating Barry Jouannet 6-3 in the last eight and Mitchell Clegg 6-1 in the semi-finals.
Jouannet, a former Oceanic Masters winner, showed an impressive return to form during his run, twice hitting six perfect darts in earlier rounds and sharing the opening six legs with Whitlock before the pony-tailed star pulled clear to victory.
Whitlock was a quarter-final loser in Sunday's event, going down 6-3 to Rob Modra before Shane Tichowitsch - who overcame Modra in the semis - took the $1,000 title.
Tichowitsch produced a superb comeback in the final to see off Rod Neeson 6-5, having found himself 5-0 down before winning the remaining six legs to battle back to victory.
