MATCH REPORTS from Tuesday's evening session at the Stan James World Matchplay, with Raymond van Barneveld's win over Denis Ovens completing the first round and the second round beginning.

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 10-7 DENIS OVENS

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD began his bid for a third successive major title with a 10-7 win over Denis Ovens at the Stan James World Matchplay.

The Dutchman has already claimed the UK Open and Las Vegas Desert Classic titles this summer, and put himself on course for a Winter Gardens win by defeating Ovens.

Ovens produced a fine display, pushing van Barneveld all the way and averaging almost 95 - but a three-leg run from the World Champion saw him take a crucial 5-2 lead in mig-game before holding on for the win.

"I started off well in the first leg but Denis played really well," said van Barneveld.

"It is tough for me and Phil Taylor, because people expect me and Phil to win the tournament. Denis was able to go on stage and maybe he was more relaxed.

"I want to win the tournament as well, and this is the best venue I've ever played in."

Van Barneveld kicked off with scores of 180 and 140 and took the first leg in 12 darts, before Ovens hit back in 13.

The Dutchman landed another maximum on his way to leg three before Ovens squared the game with a pressure double top in the fourth.

Ovens left himself 24 in the fifth with a 177 score, only to see van Barneveld finish 78 on double top and then step in to win the next two legs after the Englishman missed doubles.

Those three legs, including a break of throw, were to prove crucial in providing van Barneveld with breathing space - although the lack of pressure at times ironically led to the Dutchman missing doubles later in the game.

Ovens was never able to reduce the arrears as every leg in the remainder of the game went with the throw - with the Hertfordshire man taking out 120 and a neat two-dart 76 but unable to break his victorious opponent.

Van Barneveld will now meet Welshman Barrie Bates on Wednesday in the second round.

SECOND ROUND
ROLAND SCHOLTEN 13-6 WAYNE MARDLE

ROLAND SCHOLTEN out-gunned Wayne Mardle 13-6 to become the first man into the quarter-finals of the Stan James World Matchplay.

The Dutchman was in magnificent form to leave Mardle frustrated following a fine display.

Mardle was left shaking his head in disbelief after being left sat on a double in five of the first six legs - and finding himself 5-1 behind as a clinical Scholten made him pay.

The 2004 UK Open winner extended his lead with a 121 finish in the seventh before Mardle landed back-to-back maximums in setting up a 12-darter in reply.

Scholten on the next three, hitting two 180s of his own in one leg, to open up a 9-2 gap before a 111 finish from Mardle saw him stem the tide.

He was made to pay for two missed darts in the next but a 14-darter kept his hopes alive at 10-4.

However, he missed a chance to steal the next leg on double tops for a 117 finish and saw his hopes further dented in the next when Scholten checked out double top to move 12-4 up after another Mardle 180 left him sat waiting on 16.

Mardle won the next two legs to delay Scholten's progress, but the inevitable win was sealed with a fine 116 checkout.

"I'm delighted," said Scholten. "It's hard playing Wayne because he has the crowd behind him but I did well, my scoring was good and I finished well."

TERRY JENKINS 13-8 JOHN PART

TERRY JENKINS powered into the quarter-finals of the Stan James World Matchplay with a superb 13-8 win over John Part in Blackpool.

Jenkins has enjoyed a sensational 12 months since being a first round loser at the World Matchplay - lifting himself up to fifth in the world and reaching two major finals.

His run of form continued against Part, with a mid-game surge of winning five out of six legs seeing him come from 5-4 down to 9-6 ahead.

The game was evenly poised in the early stages, with the first eight legs being shared evenly with some brilliant shots from both players.

A 78 finish against the throw saw Part edge 5-4 up before Jenkins replied in kind in the tenth, then landing a bullseye, a 101 checkout and double top to move 8-5 in front.

Part won the 14th leg on double one with Jenkins sat on 40, and also took out 142 to win the 16th.

Jenkins took the next three to move to within a leg of the win at 12-7.

Although he missed a dart for the match in leg 20, a fifth 180 of the game pushed him clear in the next and he landed double four to seal the win.

"I'm pleased with how I played against John," said Jenkins. "I'm not frightened of anybody and I'm starting to play as well as I do in practice.

"I go out there to enjoy it and it's not the end of the world for me if I lose.

"I don't mind who I play next, I beat Michael van Gerwen the last time we played and my record's pretty even against Ronnie."
