BARRIE BATES won his third title of 2006 with a final-leg victory over Phil Taylor in the PDPA Players Championship at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Lisse.
The Welshman picked up his first Pro Tour title with a superb performance in the final.
He took the first and third sets 2-1, and held off a Taylor fightback to take the deciding set in the third leg.
Taylor won the second set 2-1 with a brilliant ten-dart leg, where he missed double 12 for a nine-darter following scores of 177, 180 and two treble twentys before landing just inside the wire.
Taylor took the fourth set without reply, and levelled the final set with a stunning 133 finish - with Bates stood on 32 for the match.
But the Welshman responded with scores of 100, 140, 100, 95 and a two-dart 66 finish to take the title.
"I'm delighted," he said. "Phil's number one in the world, a brilliant player and it's everyones dream to play him in a final.
"It's been a great year so far and this win is the best yet."
Taylor had won the previous three Players Championship tournaments he has competed in, and he said: "I tried very hard but I couldn't hit my doubles at the right time.
"Full credit to Barrie - I thought the 133 may kill him off but he came back and had a fantastic final leg."
Bates came from two sets down with a miraculous recovery in his semi-final against Colin Monk.
Monk dropped only one leg on his way to the opening two sets, before Bates found his rhythm to take six successive legs - including a 161 finish - to win 3-2.
Taylor overcame Andy Hamilton by the same scoreline following a ding-dong encounter which saw the pair trade sets before the 13-time World Champion won the decider 2-0.
Taylor also knocked out Dutch youngster Michael van Gerwen during the day, after the 17-year-old had earlier defeated Raymond van Barneveld and John Part.
Terry Jenkins followed up his run to the semi-finals of Saturday's PDPA Players Championship by reaching the last eight 24 hours later.
Saturday's champion, Colin Lloyd, was edged out by Jan van der Rassel in his opener, with runner-up Mick McGowan also a second round casualty.
