Bavaria World Darts Trophy - Day Two

THE second day of the Bavaria World Darts Trophy began with an entertaining clash of young Dutch pair Niels de Ruiter and Mareno Michels.

The duo slugged it out over five sets, with de Ruiter eventually emerging victorious 3-2 and hitting seven perfect darts in one leg.

He led by two sets before Michels mounted a comeback, winning the third set 3-1 and then the fourth in a dramatic deciding leg - which saw de Ruiter missed eight darts for the match.

De Ruiter regathered himself and took the first two legs of the final set without significant pressure from his opponent before sealing the win in the fourth leg.

Tony Eccles (pictured) ended Dutch favourite Jelle Klaasen's hopes with a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 win in the afternoon's second contest.

The Lakeside champion won two of the first three legs, but Eccles came back to take the opening set in a decider and dropped only one more leg on his way to victory.

The final game of the afternoon session saw Tony O'Shea send another Dutchman packing with a 3-1 win over Dick van Dijk in a game which was closer than the scoreline suggested.

O'Shea won his three sets 3-2 in a deciding leg, with van Dijk taking the second 3-1 but not quite able to progress.

The evening session began with another Dutch defeat, as Albertino Essers went down 3-0 to Martin Adams.

Adams won the first two sets 3-1, and though Essers took the next to a deciding leg he could only watch on as his opponent took out 120 for the match.

Vincent van der Voort survived a thrilling comeback from Goran Klemme to book his place in the last 16.

Van der Voort won the first two sets and had darts to go 2-0 up in the third before Klemme hit back by winning that leg and two more - including a 117 finish - to pull back to 2-1 in the game.

Klemme then took the fourth set 3-1 and went ahead for the first time when he took the opening leg of the deciding set.

But van der Voort won three successive legs to take victory and set up an all-Dutch meeting with de Ruiter in round two.

Scotland's Mike Veitch produced an impressive display to see off Belgium's Dirk Hespeels in straight sets, dropping just one leg after taking the first set 3-2.
