Nijman wins back-to-back Development Tour titles in Milton Keynes

Wessel Nijman (PDC)

Wessel Nijman stormed to the top of the Winmau Development Tour Order of Merit after clinching back-to-back titles in Milton Keynes on Friday.

Nijman won 16 consecutive matches in Friday's double-header at the Marshall Arena, as he pocketed £5,000 in prize money to establish a £3,800 buffer over his closest challenger Keane Barry on the Development Tour Order of Merit.

The Dutchman - also a winner in Events Eight and 13 earlier this year - kicked off Event 16 with whitewash wins over Mason Whitlock and Malik Istvan, before averaging in three figures to dispatch his compatriot Calvin Nicolai.

Following another 4-0 drubbing - this time at the expense of Xanti Van den Bergh - Nijman then crashed in successive 105 averages to see off Jack Howarth and Nathan Rafferty and breeze through to the semi-finals.

The 24-year-old reeled off four straight legs from 2-1 down to defeat newly crowned Women's World Matchplay champion Beau Greaves in the last four, and he wrapped up his eighth Development Tour crown with a deciding-leg win over Tavis Dudeney.

Dudeney - featuring in his first Development Tour final - recovered from 3-0 down to force a last-leg shoot-out, only for Nijman to open the leg with back-to-back 180s on his way to a 14-dart hold.

Nijman's third Development Tour triumph of 2024 elevated him above Barry on the Order of Merit, and he extended that lead by capping off a memorable day with Event 17 glory.

Emphatic wins against Jeffrey Keen, Rafferty, Riley Rees-Tucker and Tyler Thorpe catapulted him into the last 16, where he averaged 101 in a 4-1 thrashing of Sweden's Viktor Tingstrom.

Nijman renewed his rivalry with Greaves in the quarter-finals, although it was an identical outcome, as he converted a host of combination finishes to close out a clinical 5-2 victory.

The Dutch darter extended his winning run with a five-leg blitz of Matt Heffer in the semi-finals, and he rounded off a perfect day with a battling 5-3 success against Niko Springer in Friday's finale.

The pair had already locked horns in two Development Tour finals this year, and Nijman made it a hat-trick of victories over the talented German, producing legs of 15, 11, 17, 13 and 15 darts to triumph in a high-quality affair.

Springer- an Event Ten winner back in May - dumped out Jurjen van der Velde, Sebastian Bialecki and Barry on his way to scooping the £1,000 runner-up prize, which lifts him to fifth on the Order of Merit.

The top two players from the 2024 Development Tour Order of Merit will win a PDC Tour Card for 2025-26 and a place in the 2024/25 Paddy Power World Darts Championship, with just seven events remaining this year.

This weekend's Winmau Development Tour action continues with another double-header on Saturday, as Events 18 and 19 take place at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena.

The event draws and results are listed in the Match Centre.
