Event 21 Report

Wessel Nijman claimed his sixth Winmau Development Tour title of the year at Robin Leisure Centre as the year's final weekend of action began on Saturday with Event 21.

Dutch star Nijman - a previous winner already here in Wigan this year - came through a 247-player field to triumph at Robin Park Leisure centre, defeating fellow tour card holder Nathan Rafferty in Saturday's showpiece.

The 24-year-old conceded just six legs in his eight matches, dropping no legs in the first four, sweeping aside Jack Tarrant, Jon-Sebastian Wright, Charlie Large and Janek Hill to book his spot in the last 16, where he saw off Henry Coates, beating the Englishman 4-0.

Wessel then recorded a 93 average in a tight battle against Xanti Van den Bergh in the quarter-finals, and he set up a showdown with rival Niko Springer after the German beat Llew Bevan 5-1, averaging upwards of 110.

Van Veen averaged 98 to Springer's 91 in the Event Ten decider, but Springer's superiority on the outer ring proved decisive, with the German converting crucial 107 and 78 checkouts on his way to a superb 5-2 victory.

Nijman's exceptional win secures top spot for the young superstar on the Winmau Development Tour Order of Merit, as he cannot be caught and therefore books his place in the Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton in November.
