MICHAEL VAN GERWEN won the fifth Coral UK Open Qualifier in emphatic style, posting a 109.44 average as he defeated Gerwyn Price 6-2 in the final to scoop the £10,000 prize at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Saturday.
The world number one was in imperious form and there was little Price - who reached a PDC ranking event final for the first time - could do to stop van Gerwen, despite averaging 102 himself.
After van Gerwen raced into the lead, Price landed double 12 to square things up the Dutchman claimed three legs in succession, including a 130 checkout on the bull, to comfortably lead 4-1.
Welshman Price grabbed himself a lifeline as he halved the deficit to two legs, but there was no catching van Gerwen as his superb finishing continued to see him quickly win the remaining two legs needed for victory.
On his way to the final, van Gerwen dropped no more than three legs against any opponent, as he overcame the in-form Alan Norris and Joey Ten Berge to reach the last 32.
In a repeat of the Dutch Darts Masters final, he again saw off Daryl Gurney before easing past Andy Hamilton and Terry Jenkins to reach the final four.
Phil Taylor, who once again enjoyed a strong run, was next to feel the wrath of van Gerwen as he fired in another 109 average and four 180's to reach the final.
The win was van Gerwen's second of the five Coral UK Open Qualifiers held so far this month, while he also secured a tournament win for a fourth successive weekend to follow up January's Unibet Masters triumph and last week's Dutch Darts Masters success.
It was an impressive day's work for Price too, as he beat four of the world's top 32 en route to the final, his first in just over two years on the PDC circuit.
In the opening rounds, he saw off Dave Ladley, Matt Clark and Mervyn King, before defeating Vincent van der Voort and former Lakeside Champion Mark Webster to reach the semi-finals.
Standing in his way was Mensur Suljovic, who had reached the final four of a PDC ProTour event for the ninth time, but the 30-year-old showed no nerves as he won 6-3 to set up the clash with van Gerwen.
Elsewhere, it was another disappointing day for Raymond van Barneveld and Robert Thornton, as they suffered second round exits for the second time this weekend at the hands of Ronny Huybrechts and Matt Edgar respectively, while Friday's runner-up James Wade and 2015 UK Open finalist Peter Wright also suffered early exits.
It was another strong day for veteran star Jenkins and Australian Simon Whitlock, as they reached the last eight for the second time in succession.
Play resumes tomorrow (February 21) at the Robin Park Tennis Centre as players have their last chance to secure qualification to the Coral UK Open Televised with the sixth and final Qualifier.
