THE first 17 Rileys Amateur Qualifiers for the 2010 UK Open have won their places at the Reebok Stadium in June, and include a former powerlifting champion.
A series of qualifying events are being held in Rileys clubs around the UK for 32 amateur players to win a spot alongside the sport's biggest names in the Sky Sports-televised UK Open finals from June 3-6.
The qualifiers began in 20 Rileys Darts Zones on April 10 and 11, with 32 players from each event progressing to play in the Regional Final down to a winner.
The opening eight were staged on Saturday, with the winners including Kettering teenager Ricky Evans, a former England Youth star who qualified from Burton-on-Trent alongside Ripley's Darren Sullivan.
Hampshire's Paul Gibbs, who played in the 2007 Lakeside Championship, was joined by Cowes' Tony Broughton in qualifying from Bournemouth, with the latter defeating Johnny Haines - a qualifier for the past four years - in the final.
Devon's John Lakeman was the Exeter qualifier, defeating Terry Prowse in the final, while Maidstone-based Barrie Knight was Gillingham's qualifier.
Milton Keynes' Paul Warwick and Basildon's Ashley Whisker were the qualifiers from London (Victoria).
Sunday's nine qualifiers included Peter Fisher, a former powerlifting champion who won through in Oxford alongside Joe Palmer.
Alex Harrison and David Martin won through the Cardiff qualifiers, while Barrie Webb, a cabinet maker from Rockland All Saints in Norfolk, came through the Norwich qualifier.
Burgess Hill's Dean Edlin celebrated his birthday by winning the Brighton event, alongside Michael Hammond, a postman from Brighton.
Henry Murphy, a nurse from Battersea, and Chertsey's Paul Neate won through the two qualifiers in Croydon to book their places at Bolton.
Further Regional Finals are being held on May 1, 2 and 8 to determine the final 15 places for the Rileys Amateur Qualifiers.
The leading 96 professionals from the UK Open Order of Merit after eight qualifiers will join the 32 Rileys Amateur Qualifiers in the UK Open finals in Bolton, alongside eight County representatives who will come in at the preliminary round stage.
Ian Gleeson won the Northumberland County play-off, defeating Davy Richardson-Page in the final, while Hugh Ringland won the Lothian County play-off and Jay Foreman will represent Nottinghamshire.
Tony Hutchinson had previously won Hampshire's play-off for a place in Bolton.
