Super Springer wins third Development Tour title of 2024

Niko Springer claimed his third Winmau Development Tour title of 2024 on Sunday, defeating Leon Weber 5-3 in an all-German Event 20 decider in Milton Keynes.

Springer - an Event 18 winner on Saturday - made it two titles in as many days to continue his sparkling form at the Marshall Arena.

The 24-year-old was also a runner-up to Wessel Nijman in Event 17, and he overcame his Dutch rival to move up to second on the Development Tour Order of Merit.

Following consecutive 4-1 wins against Jake Fewell and Patrik Williams, Springer moved through to round four with a battling 4-2 success against Mason Whitlock.

The German then posted ton-topping averages to dispatch Colinn Haverkate and Charlie Manby, before dumping out Danny Jansen in the quarter-finals.

Springer continued his march towards glory with a statement 5-1 win against Nijman in the last four, before rounding off a terrific weekend with victory against his compatriot Weber.

Weber led 2-0 and 3-1 as he set his sights on a maiden Development Tour crown, only for Springer to reel off four straight legs to complete the comeback and pocket the £2,500 top prize.

Weber impressed in his run to Sunday’s showpiece, averaging 99.42 in his second round win over Tim Scholz, while also dumping out Tour Card Holder Paul Krohne and Dominik Gruellich in the latter stages.

Gruellich saw off Nathan Girvan and Irish duo Keane Barry and Dylan Slevin in reaching the semi-finals, where he was joined by Nijman.

Prior to Event 20, the Dutchman had won 31 of his 32 matches this weekend, and he relinquished just five legs in his opening six matches, until Springer ended his title bid.

It was also a memorable day for Morgan Shillito, who produced the third nine-darter on the Development Tour this weekend, after achieving perfection in his last 64 clash against Harvey Wilkinson.

The year’s fifth and final weekend of Winmau Development Tour action will take place from October 12-13, as Events 21-24 are followed by the early rounds of the Winmau World Youth Championship on October 14.

The top two players from the 2024 Development Tour Order of Merit will win a PDC Tour Card for 2025-26 and a place in the 2024/25 Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

Nijman boasts a £5,500 lead over second-placed Springer with four events remaining, although the German looks poised to secure a World Championship debut and a two-year Tour Card following his exploits this weekend.
