Humphries aiming to complete "incredible 12 months" in "dream final"

Luke Humphries (Simon O'Connor, PDC)

Luke Humphries believes that retaining the BoyleSports World Grand Prix title on Sunday would cap off "the most incredible 12 months".

Humphries picked up his first televised ranking title a the 2023 World Grand Prix, defeating Gerwyn Price in Leicester to pick up the prestigious trophy.

That success was followed by wins in the Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Finals before he propelled himself to world number one status by winning the World Championship.

Humphries has since won the World Cup and World Matchplay and reached the finals of the UK Open and Premier League.

He faces Mike De Decker in Sunday's World Grand Prix final, and admits that victory over the emerging Belgian would complete a remarkable year.

"I've achieved so much in the last 12 months and I'd love to go and cap it off with one more," he said. "If I can win, it really would mean a lot and it would be the most incredible 12 months.

"I've achieved something which is absolutely incredible.

"I've had so many appearances where I've just got that bit of luck - many times in your career you'll win tournaments on a bit of luck, and I have, but you need that bit of class when it means the most."

Humphries first crossed paths with De Decker on the PDC's Development Tour circuit, which also helped to propel Van den Bergh to stardom.

"75% of the field [in the semi-finals] was part of the Development Tour and that's a credit to the PDC because without that secondary tour, who knows if all three of us would have been here," he added.

"It's a credit to them for setting up these secondary tours, allowing us players to come on and achieve our dreams.

"I think it's a dream final, it really is. We've had so many battles and it's going to be a good game. Mike's playing well and I know I'm going to have to be at my best again."

Sunday's final will begin from 2000 BST, with Humphries aiming to become only the third player to retain the title, while De Decker is bidding to be only the second Belgian star to win a televised PDC event.

Humphries is the huge 1/6 favourite with sponsors BoyleSports going into Sunday's final, with De Decker the 4/1 outsider to claim the £120,000 top prize.

The BoyleSports World Grand Prix is being broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK, through the PDC's worldwide broadcast partners including DAZN and Viaplay, and on PDCTV (excluding subscribers based in the UK, Germany, Austria & Switzerland).
