Cullen to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in charity challenge

Joe Cullen is to climb Africa's highest mountain for charity this month in what he has described as a "life long dream".

The Bradford star will be travelling to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Andy's Man Club, a suicide prevention charity which offers free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online.

Cullen will be starting the eight-day challenge on January 17 during a break ahead of the Winmau World Masters, and has set up a JustGiving page for anyone wishing to support his charity challenge.

"I'll be climbing Kilimanjaro on 17th January 2025...and I thought why not tie in a life long dream of doing so with raising a few quid for an amazing charity," Cullen wrote on Instagram.

"Andy's Man Club work tirelessly to provide support for all men struggling with anything! Day to day life, family issues, mental illness or if you just want a simple chat!"

Cullen is also aiming to be the first person ever to throw darts on the summit of Kilimanjaro, with manufacturers Winmau set to set a dartboard up with the former Masters champion.

Speaking to Metro, he added: "I might be wrong, but to my knowledge no one has ever thrown darts at the top of Kilimanjaro.

"Winmau's main dartboard factory is in Kenya. Apparently on a clear day you can see the top of Kilimanjaro from there. They’re sending some bits over so we’re going to set a dartboard up at the top.

"The actual physical side of it isn't that bad. You have to walk really slowly because of the altitude. It's more mental and how you adapt to different levels of altitude."

Cullen also revealed his personal motivation behind the challenge, adding: "I lost one of my best friends, Rob, to suicide four years ago in March. Just by coincidence the day I’m starting is his birthday.

"Me and my wife own a cafe in Wyke and we’ve got a charity box in there for Andy's Man Club. A couple of guys who run local meetings come in all the time."

Cullen's fellow darts star Damon Heta recently supported Andy's Man Club at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship, wearing the charity's logo on the rear of his shirt.

Andy's Man Club was founded in memory of Andy Roberts, who passed away in 2016. Click here for more details about Andy's Man Club.
