Comito snatches World Championship place on DPA ProTour's final weekend

Joe Comito will make his Paddy Power World Darts Championship debut in December after snatching qualification from the DartPlayers Australia ProTour on Sunday.

The 43-year-old from Harvey has competed on the TV stage in the past three years when the World Series of Darts has visited Australia.

However, he will now travel to London's Alexandra Palace later in 2024 following a remarkable series of displays on the final weekend of the DPA ProTour.

Comito had gone into the year's final weekend $1,400 behind DPA Order of Merit leader Jeremy Fagg and in seventh place in the standings - but won two events and was runner-up in the other in a remarkable run.

The weekend's action at the Fraternity Club in Wollongong began with James Bailey denying Comito in the Event 13 decider, taking a 6-4 victory on Friday.

Comito then overcame Danny Porter 6-4 to win Saturday's Event 14 title, and was a 3-1 winner in sets against Stuart Coburn in Event 15's decider, averaging 93.39 in a strong display to cap a memorable weekend.

"It has not sunk in yet," said Comito, reflecting on the best weekend of his career. "I played well during the week back at home and I was pretty confident.

"I felt good and played well in the final today as well. I wanted to prove a point, I have been disappointed with my TV performances and wanted to prove how well I can play.

"I have put myself in this situation and you never know what happens. I will have to do well to go to the next level. It will be an amazing experience."

Fagg lost out in the Event 13 quarter-finals and was knocked out in the Last 32 in the remaining two events as he slipped to third on the final Order of Merit, behind Comito and Brandon Weening.

A further place in the Paddy Power World Darts Championship is on offer at the DPA Oceanic Masters, which will be held on October 20 in Auckland.
