JOHN HENDERSON has hailed his defeat of Michael van Gerwen as the "best win" of his career after a stunning World Grand Prix triumph on Sunday.
The Scot caused a major upset by knocking out reigning champion Van Gerwen in a deciding leg at Dublin's Citywest Hotel, despite the top seed and World Champion being the 4/5 pre-tournament favourite and 1/20 to win the match with sponsors Unibet.
Having won the opening set after starting the better of the two players, Henderson withstood Van Gerwen's second set barrage before edging to victory in the decider.
He is now aiming to savour his triumph over the world number one before focusing on Tuesday's second round meeting with Alan Norris in the double-start event.
"Michael's the best player in the world at the moment and to beat him on that big stage is fantastic," he said. "You're playing Michael van Gerwen, so it's got to be the best win.
"When I won the first set, I was expecting him to come back and Michael did what he does - he battered the treble 20 but he was struggling with his doubles to start. I had to try and capitalise on that and I did.
"When you're playing Michael you expect to be the underdog. It isn't often Michael plays like that so you've got to jump on it when he does.
"I'm world number 32 and I've just beaten the number one - the way the PDC is at the moment is fantastic and the depth is unbelievable. There's preferable draws in this but there's no easy draws.
"Anything's possible. I've got Alan Norris next so I've to go back on the practice board, try come down from this and I'm looking forward now to Tuesday night and hopefully I can progress and show everybody what I can do."
The Unibet World Grand Prix is being held until October 7 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, live on Sky Sports.
